A qualifier that turns into a knockout is the shape most club competitions actually take, and the one a shared scorecard cannot express. This one is played out to a champion, so you can see every part of it at once.

Norfolk Club Championship

A stroke-play qualifier that becomes a match-play knockout.

Two days of gross stroke play over 24 entrants, the top four through to the semi-finals, then a final for the Norfolk Cup. Scores reset at every stage, so nobody carries a stroke out of qualifying and the semi-final winner starts the final all square.

Four rounds, three days, one trophy — and a different format each day.

Eight friends across four Melbourne sandbelt courses, scored on position points so a blow-up round costs you places rather than the trip. Round one is played in pairs; the rest are individual.

Ryder Cup Weekend

Two sides, five sessions, match points.

Europe against the USA over foursomes, fourballs and singles. Every match is worth exactly one point between the two teams, so the session totals and the match points can never disagree.

Single rounds

One card, one afternoon.

Most golf is not a tournament. These are ordinary scorecards — the thing you make in under a minute and send to the group chat, shown here as the group sees it.

Bachelor Party Golf

One card, two teams, live Stableford.

The ordinary Saturday case, and the one most groups start with: eight players split across two teams, net Stableford, everybody tapping in their own scores.

Four-ball Stableford for two teams. Each player scores their own points and the team takes the best on each hole — the format that keeps a bad round from costing the side anything.

Medal play for four, scored gross — no handicap strokes anywhere. The leaderboard reads in the golfer’s language of score to par, with a live count of how far round each player is.

Quota Points Game

Everybody chases a target of their own.

Three players of very different abilities, each beating (or missing) a personal quota of 36 minus their handicap. Scored on the modified scale, which pays more for the good holes.
